A Few of Dr. Dipan Desai's Contributions to Ophthalmology

  • For Stabilizing the Eye in Phako Surgery, The Desai Fork was invented (in place of Thornton Fine Ring). This allows better maneuverability, causes less bleeding of conjunctiva and is a very useful tool.
  • We showed the film on Victory Chopping at London and San Diego for Hard Cataract. This technique was invented by us since 1996 and is very effective, safe, repeatable using less Phako Energy and Fluid.
  • Presently we are working on a device to check for wound leak (Leak Master). This will help to prevent leaks in Post Operative period and also decrease the incidence of Endophthalmitis.
  • Devised a new surgery for Ptosis in 1990 & presented it in an international conference in Singapore in 1993. This surgery allows post-operative adjustment of the drooping lid & is sutureless. Formerly Fascia Lata was removed from the thigh through a large incision. The new technique uses fishing hook nylon and a lumbar puncture needle. No scar is visible after 4 days.
  • Invented & established the 'QUASAR TECHNIQUE OF PHACO-EMULSIFICATION' (Quick And Safe And Reliable) technique for removal of nuclei of hard cataracts by phako-emulsification in 1995. This work has been presented nationally & internationally on numerous occasions. This technique is being utilised immensely today by surgeons in India and the U.S.A.
  • Devised a New Phako Tip. This tip is used to remove cataracts in the younger age groups with utilisation of the least amount of Phako energy. The cataract is sucked out and the phako energy is used only to break the occlusion. This tip has been used profusely for Posterior Polar Cataracts also, reducing the chances of not being able to implant an IOL.
  • Devised a New Limbal Incision for carrying out topical phako-emulsification with 5mm. PMMA lenses
  • Developed the 'Desai Fork'. This helps to fix the eye during incision making & other manipulations. It is used instead of the bulky Thornton- Fine Ring.
  • Developed the 'Desai Ball Canula' to prevent inadvertent damage to ocular structures. It also helps to fix the eye as well as allows injection of visco-elastics.
  • Presently removing cataracts through a 1.2 mm. incision only. A special phako tip has been created and coated for the same as well as other instruments.
  • Established Glycosylated Haemoglobin testing by spectro-photometric method for the first time in Gujarat in 1984.
